Day-to-day atmosphere
Amstelveen is a 1960s–80s garden city: green, clean and remarkably organised. The Stadshart (the shopping centre of town) gathers shops, a market and a media library; the Amsterdamse Bos — one of Europe's largest parks, with its play meadows and open-air theatre — borders the municipality to the west. The population is highly international: expat professionals from all over the world, drawn by the same schools.
Do not expect Amsterdam-style neighbourhood life: here, people entertain at home, do sport at a club and go “into town” (Amsterdam) for nights out. It is a deliberate lifestyle choice — that of space and serenity.
Amstelveen rents in 2026
| Property type | Indicative monthly rent |
|---|---|
| 1 bedroom | €2,100 – 2,300 |
| 2 bedrooms | €2,600 – 3,600 |
| 3–4-bedroom house | €3,000 – 4,500 |
| Large house with garden | €4,500 – 5,500 |
For the same floor area, count roughly 30% less than in Oud-Zuid — and above all, the supply of family houses is real here, whereas it is almost non-existent within Amsterdam. Properties near the international schools go very fast at the end of the school year: start your search in spring for a September move.
Where to look: the micro-neighbourhoods
- Elsrijk: the historic district close to the Stadshart and the international schools, in high demand.
- Randwijck (north): on the border with Amsterdam, close to the tram and the Zuidas — ideal if one parent works in the city.
- Westwijk (south): more recent, family houses, good value for money.
- Kostverlorenhof / Keizer Karelpark: central, apartments and terraced houses at gentler prices.
Transport and access
Tram 25 (the Amsteltram) links Amstelveen to Amsterdam Zuid station in about twenty minutes, connecting to metro 52 towards the whole of Amsterdam. Schiphol is 15 minutes away by car or direct bus — a real argument for expats who travel. It is the only district in this guide where a car is genuinely useful (shopping, children's activities), without being mandatory.
Who is Amstelveen for?
Ideal for: families with children at the French Lycée or an international school, expat executives on a package, anyone who wants a house and a garden.
Less suited to: singles and urban couples — they will soon miss lively neighbourhood life; look at De Pijp or Oost instead.
Pros: French Lycée and international schools, houses with gardens, calm and safety, Amsterdamse Bos, Schiphol 15 minutes away.
Cons: suburban atmosphere, nights out in Amsterdam (25 min), a car is often useful.
